Portfolio Presentation/Extra Curricular Leaving Certificate Art Classes
With 600 points being allocated towards portfolio presentation to enter the Art Colleges there is a right and a wrong way for would-be art students to make an impression.
It is very important to take note of the guidelines for portfolios. There is no point in ignoring them, thinking that your way is better when you only end up annoying the assessmnet panel with a messy, incoherent or over stuffed portfolio. A simple mistake such as forgetting that an oil painting might take up to three months to dry could be disastrous. That is how to get a portfolio wrong but what should a good porfolio contain?
What a Good Portfolio Should Contain.
A portfolio should include a collection of no more than 20 samples of finished artwork, sketches and notebooks, showing a range of approaches and materials. It should demonstrate an aptitude and be geared towards the course for which you want to apply. Arrange the work in an orderly, accessible manner in a secure folder that is neat and clearly labelled. No matter which art or design course, those assessing portfolios will want to see a clear aptitude for drawing, which can be freehand, observational or technical. Those marking will also want to see practical ability and strong conceptual design. If you have chosen a topic, say flowers or shoes, sketch the topic in different media, working through pencil, charcoal, ink and watercolours. Develop your sketches and document them, showing how you planned and developed the work. Strong candidates also experiment with composition, balance and texture and try techniques such as isolated enlargements or using repeated patterns.
What they dont want to see.
Copies of pictures or photographs because they don’t involve a person responding to the world, they prefer to see people drawing from the real world.
