Painting
These painting classes are suitable for anybody from complete beginners to people with more experience wanting to broaden their approach to art. The course begins with a look at drawing and how to get started following by an excellent introduction to painting using acrylics/oils/watercolours. There is a maximum of just ten places and you can be sure of the attention and support you need to succeed.
Carmel Doherty is an artist and tutor with over twenty years experience of running successful arts courses. She has taught painting/sculpture/digital media and digital photography from degree level students in Limerick School of Art to complete beginners and many others including professional artists.
For some taking an arts course is all about getting started and building confidence while for others it is a chance to explore new directions and techniques. Whatever your individual goals are you will be taught as an individual and focus will be on what you need and want to acheive rather than simply being herded along with the group. For this reason Carmel limits the maximum number of people on each course to just ten. This means you get lots of individual support and really get the most out of your arts course.
As each art piece is individual, some with an emphasis on brilliant colour, some browns or greens I therefore believe that it is important for each student to buy their own paint as I believe that it is not possible to reproduce specific colours by simply mixing primary pigments. The emphasis in each class is to help you develop your art individually rather than following any set programme or regime.
Painting with Acrylics
This is a painting course which will help you get the most out of painting with acrylics. As a painting medium Acrylic offers excellent flexibility and is great for beginners but it is also used by many professional artists. Mixed with water it has very enriched vibrant colours which dry fast. Learn to explore composition and techniques to create a successful painting.
Portrait Painting
Portrait painting is an area which everybody enjoys. It is a great way of learning how to look at the details of how your face is constructed and how to break down the face into sections, tone and colour. Every body can paint portraits, from the very young to the very old, its easy when you know how.
Painting with Oils
Oils are many artists preferred medium because of their rich pigments and slow drying method allowing for a greater flexibility in creating tonal values, areas of dark and light, layering and texture.
Mixed Media
Working in mixed media can be very liberating for your art. It can be a way of creating very fast work and great for people facing a creative block. Using this technique you can explore the use of paint and colour and you will be free to experiment by introducing other elements such as pastel, found images and materials, textures and collage. Digital imagery can also be introduced into this element of creating art, an example of this would be Pop Art.
Art from your Imagination
Although similar to the painting course the emphasis on this particular art form is all about creating art from your own imagination. We will explore inspiration for creating art from a variety of sources including dreams, other artists, literature, photography, etc. You will be encouraged to consider alternative perspectives and compositions. This is an advanced area of creativity where you will begin to develop a distinct style specifically individual to you.
